Well, I do a little bit of almost useless programming. Please feel free to download any of the programs below. Donations and suggestions for improvement are welcome (in that order :-)
Wisdom 4 Today (version 1.0)
A program that displays "wisdom" quotes. The program pops-up every
time Windows (all versions) is (re)started with the days quote. It
is approximately 300KB in size and was developed with VB6 (April
2003). The UNIX version (written in PERL) should soon be available.
It updates the MOTD (/etc/motd) file once a day with the day's
quote. Both .EXE and .ZIP versions are available for download.
w4tsetup.exe (304KB)
w4tsetup.zip (274KB)
Sample program run (screenshots) is available here.
Roots (version 1.0)
This "mini"
program computes the nth root of any number where n is
specified. The result is given in (whole number) surd form. It can
also handle negative number. It also does number factorisation.
Both .EXE and .ZIP versions are available for download.
roots.exe (16KB 52KB) - this needs no installation
but if it does not work then download one of the pair below.
roots.exe (410KB)
roots.zip (380KB)
Sample program run (screenshots) is available here.
TalkServer (version 3.0)
So you want to chat on your LAN, but the Microsoft Windows Messenger service has been disabled
(for good reason too! Lot's of spammers on the web are using it to broadcast
their adverts! But if you have a properly configured firewall, this shouldn't be
an issue). Just put the executable file below on systems that need to talk to
each other and run the program. An "ear" will appear in your systray-
right-click on the ear, select "Send Message" from the pop-up menu and
... start talking!
Both .EXE and .ZIP versions are available for download.
TalkServer.exe (12KB 36KB)
TalkServer.zip (10KB)
The Server listens on TCP port 2600.
Issues: The program may terminate with an error message if you don't have
the MSWINSCK.OCX file properly installed on
your system (requires Administrative access unless you are using Windows 95/98/ME)
If you find that you need the file, then download the zip file MSWINSCK.ZIP.
Uncompress it, and move the uncompressed file to your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
directory (Windows 95/98/XP) or to your C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32
directory (Windows 2000). Launch a command prompt (start-->run-->cmd) and
type the following commands into it:
cd \winnt\system32 (ENTER key) - or use "cd \windows\system32" (for
Windows 95/98/XP)
regsvr32 mswinsck.ocx (ENTER key)
Close the command prompt window.
That is it! The program should start properly now.
Finally, you probably noticed the crossed-out figures above for the file-sizes
of roots.exe and Talkserver.exe. I used a well-known compressor called UPX on
them. That's about 65% reduction in size which is quite good. Interestingly, it
wouldn't compress self-extracting executables such as the ones created by the M$
VB compiler - which makes sense since these files are already compressed anyway.
